Flower Child
The figure seems to be disappearing into the same atmosphere that surrounds her.
The image is almost entirely about edges. Parts of the figure remain clear while others dissolve into pale floral and atmospheric forms, making the body feel less solid from one moment to the next.
Experimental photographers such as Man Ray and Lee Miller often treated photography as material rather than simple documentation. Exposure, shadow, solarization and darkroom manipulation could make the photographic image behave like drawing or dream.
Here, absence does much of the work. The less information we are given, the more the eye tries to complete the figure. Photographic abstraction can come from removing detail just as effectively as adding it.
