Draft Day Bloom

Draft Day Bloom

Art With a Sense of Humor · April 23, 2026

A football the size of a compact car, an NFL shield wearing its Sunday best, and downtown Pittsburgh sprouting flowers like the city just got watered with nacho cheese.

Welcome to draft day.

This piece feels like a tailgate wandered into a children’s book and somehow got gallery lighting. The orange sky, chunky buildings, big happy botanicals, and hand-cut shapes have that mid-century editorial joy; a little Charley Harper in the simplified forms, some Mary Blair in the color confidence, and a splash of folk-art poster energy for good measure.

The best part? Nothing is trying to behave. The football rolls right through the foreground like it paid for parking. The skyline stands tall but still feels handmade. The flowers are almost as big as the buildings, which is exactly how Pittsburgh gets when sports are involved: civic pride, but make it floral.

Mini art lesson: this is scale play. When an artist makes one object wildly oversized, your brain immediately knows what matters. Here, the football isn’t just a football. It’s the main character. The city becomes the stage, the flowers become the marching band, and the word “DRAFT” basically yells from the balcony.

Fun fact: the first NFL Draft was held in 1936, and there were only nine teams picking players. No massive stage. No prime-time spectacle. No fan festival. Just football people making football decisions in a hotel room. Which, honestly, sounds like the least dramatic version of a very dramatic sport.

Today, Pittsburgh gets the confetti version.

Good art deserves good company.
