Vacation With a Side of Carbs

Vacation With a Side of Carbs

Just Look at This · June 23, 2026

This painting has never once checked email on vacation.

It’s pure coastal daydream: candy-colored houses stacked into the cliff, water glittering like it knows it’s being watched, and a border packed with lemons, tomatoes, flowers, spritzes, pasta, pastry, and enough visual calories to make your phone smell like basil.

The style sits somewhere between a vintage travel poster, a hand-painted menu, and the kind of postcard you buy on the first day of vacation because you’re suddenly convinced you’re “a postcard person.”

Here’s the art lesson hiding under the limoncello: this uses a decorative border, a device artists have loved for centuries. Medieval manuscripts used borders to frame sacred text with flowers, creatures, vines, and tiny visual surprises. Here, the border does the same job, only with tomatoes and dessert. It doesn’t just frame the scene. It tells you how to feel before you even arrive.

Joyful. Hungry. Slightly overdressed for lunch.

There’s a little Raoul Dufy in that sparkling sea, a little Maira Kalman in the loose, charming chaos, and a little Matisse in the way pattern and color refuse to behave like background music. Everything wants a solo.

And honestly?

Let it.

This is not a quiet picture. It’s a table for twelve. It’s sun on your shoulders. It’s the first sip, the second forkful, the third time you say, “I could live here,” while making absolutely no realistic plan to do so.

La Dolce Vita, indeed.

Good art deserves good company.
