Saint Suds

Art With a Sense of Humor · March 17, 2026

(An extra one today, because I forgot it was St. Patrick’s Day.)

Like if a Renaissance master got invited to the pub and decided holiness could use a head of foam.

This one began with St. Patrick’s Day, but it doesn’t play the holiday like a cheap green party hat. It goes full cathedral-meets-tavern. A solemn old saint stares out with the gravity of a man who has seen empires rise, fall, and still can’t believe what people do after two pints. Emerald robes. Ivory mitre. A beard with enough texture to deserve its own museum wing. And there, glowing like a sacred relic for the common man, a giant frothy beer.

What makes the image work is the tension. The face is painted with the seriousness of a Northern Renaissance portrait—think Hans Memling, Jan van Eyck, even a little Rembrandt in the moody light—while the beer mug crashes in like a visual punchline. That contrast is the whole game. Reverence meets mischief. Devotion meets happy hour.

Here’s the art lesson: this is a great example of juxtaposition. That’s when artists place two unlike things side by side to create surprise, humor, or meaning. The sacred and the ordinary sharpen each other here. The saint feels more human. The beer feels weirdly mythic. Put simply: opposites make each other louder.

And for the record, St. Patrick probably wasn’t even Irish by birth—he was likely born in Roman Britain, then brought to Ireland after being kidnapped as a teenager. So one of the most Irish-feeling holidays on earth is built around a man who technically started as an import. Which, honestly, feels very on brand for history: messy, surprising, and better after a bevie or two.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. May your spirit be lifted, your pint be full, and your portraits dramatically overlit.

Good art deserves good company.
